COTS Raffle

In 2018, local real estate agent Karl Bundesen saw an opportunity to support his community in a meaningful way by creating a raffle that featured only local restaurants—an initiative designed to spotlight Petaluma’s vibrant food scene while raising funds for a cause close to his heart: COTS (Committee on the Shelterless). That first year, about 35 local restaurants joined the effort by offering gift cards as prizes for what became the COTS Raffle. Since then, the event has grown in both participation and impact, taking brief pauses only in 2020 and 2024. This fall marks the raffle’s seventh year, and its mission remains unchanged: to bring people together in support of those experiencing homelessness. Fellow agent Bill Gabbert has also championed COTS, citing the organization’s results and dedication. “As someone in real estate, I understand how closely housing is tied to every aspect of life,” he says. “COTS is doing the hard work of helping people find stability and hope.” For Bill, the connection to COTS is deeply personal—his nephew, along with several clients and friends, has received support through the organization’s programs.

A unique element of the raffle is its exclusive focus on Petaluma’s local restaurants, highlighting the small businesses that make the town special while encouraging community engagement. For businesses, supporting the COTS Raffle is an investment in a stronger, more compassionate community. “When you help COTS, you’re not just helping individuals—you’re improving the environment for everyone,” Bill adds. Homelessness impacts the entire community, and addressing it creates a better place to live and work. For individuals, buying raffle tickets offers a fun yet impactful way to give back, with each ticket directly supporting COTS’ programs, including shelter, meals, and housing assistance. Over the years, there have been many unforgettable moments, such as raffle winners who donated their gift cards back to COTS, creating a beautiful cycle of generosity. As the COTS Raffle enters its seventh year, it stands as more than just a fundraiser—it is a celebration of local businesses, a testament to community spirit, and a powerful reminder of how one good idea can evolve into something extraordinary.
